About Lura Lauf
my musical background
My first musical experiences were shared with and fostered by my father, Bill Lauf, who is a wonderful singer/songwriter and tenor guitarist. At seven, I began taking piano lessons and then went on to study music at Syracuse University, Since graduating in 2000, I have taught piano to hundreds of students of all ages ranging from young children to retired adults. I have taught at schools, privately and through volunteer work at community centers. Musically, I’ve worked on projects such as composing for video and have been featured on various recordings. I am currently working on my first album of compositions which I hope to complete by 2017.
My specialty is teaching beginners of all ages and I have taught private lessons as well as group classes at The Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago and The Wheeler School in Providence. I believe that music is an inherent part of being human, not something given to a chosen few and my main objective when teaching is to help you reach your musical goals. Having primarily studied classical piano, I believe in the benefits of this thorough approach to music. However, if you have no interest in reading we can work together on what will motivate you. You will learn to play music you love and ultimately gain the knowledge to help you teach yourself for life. A typical lesson incorporates improvisation, rhythm exercises, theory, ear training and games for younger students. There will also be opportunities to share what you've learned through performances during the year. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or would like to hear more details about my approach to teaching. I look forward to working with you!
